New Year’s Day Tradition with Green Tea and Wagashi

Toraya, the Wagshi maker, has it’s signature shop in Akasaka. It is located on Aoyama Dori Street adjacent from the Toyokawa Inari Shrine. People enjoy visiting them on New year’s eve and on New year’s day.  Big kites are decorated on their wall and they light it up on New year’s eve.  From 0:00 to 4:00am, they open their tea room and serve people who visit the Shrine across the street.  They also sell freshly made wagashi that they steam in front of the store from midnight.  When we got there at around 0:15, we saw a long line to both the outside stand shop and to the downstairs tea room.  We got in the line to the tea room and enjoyed our first green tea and wagashi in 2015.
